This marks a historic moment for Gauff, who becomes the first tennis player to represent the US in this capacity.

The young star, who missed the Tokyo Olympics due to COVID-19, expressed her immense pride and gratitude for the opportunity.

“I never thought in a million years I would have the honor of carrying the American flag for Team USA in the opening ceremony.

“I could not be more proud to lead my teammates with LeBron as we showcase our dedication and passion on the biggest stage there is,” Gauff said.

The US Olympic and Paralympic Committee (USOPC) selected Gauff and James through a vote among the athletes. USOPC CEO Sarah Hirshland praised Gauff's dedication and commitment to representing her country.

“To be nominated by your teammates for this honour speaks volumes about the way in which Coco approaches her sport and her role as a member of Team USA,” Hirshland said.

Gauff, who captured her first Grand Slam title at the US Open last year, is poised to compete in both singles and doubles at the Paris Olympics.
