Osimhen aims to break ex-Chelsea star George Weah's record
Super Eagles star Victor Osimhen has expressed his desire to break George Weah’s record in Serie A.
Years before Osimhen arrived, Weah was Africa’s star in the Italian top flight. The ex-Liberia international spent almost five successful years in Italy after joining AC Milan from PSG in the summer of 1995.
Weah's long-standing Serie A record
Weah left Milan in January 2002 for a loan stint with Chelsea and Manchester City, but during his time in Italy, he enjoyed a productive spell.
The Liberian president scored 46 goals in 114 league games across five seasons during his time in Serie A, ensuring he left Italy as Africa’s all-time top scorer in the Italian top flight.
Since then, no African player has come close to breaking Weah’s record. However, Osimhen is close to eclipsing the Liberia great’s record, and he is determined to do that.
Osimhen chasing Weah
While Osimhen recognises Weah’s greatness as one of Africa’s greatest players of all time, the Super Eagles star is eager to stand alone in Serie A.
“Weah is considered one of the great strikers that have graced the Serie A,” Osimhen told Moor Sportz when asked about Weah’s record
“I want to continue to give my best and do well for my team.
At the end of the season, I think I stand a chance of surpassing or meeting the record,” Osimhen added.
Osimhen is well on course to break Weah’s record this season. The Nigerian international is only just one goal shy of equalling the Liberian president’s record.
The Super Eagles star has scored 45 goals in 74 league games since he arrived in Italy in the summer of 2020.
Osimhen scored ten goals in his first season before scoring another 14 in his second year. He currently leads the scorer’s chart this season with 21 goals in 23 matches.
The Super Eagles star is already the highest-scoring Nigerian in Italy while he is only one goal from breaking Samuel Eto’o’s record of most goals scored by an African in a single Serie A campaign.
Osimhen could break Eto’o’s record and equal Weah’s record in Napoli’s clash against Lecce on Friday.
However, he will need to pass a late fitness test for the match as he is still struggling with an adductor injury.
