Orlando Pirates: Millions the Buccaneers Have Banked After a Dominant Cup Double
Orlando Pirates have claimed the first two domestic trophies of the season, adding the Carling Knockout Cup to their earlier MTN8 triumph.
The Buccaneers have demonstrated their cup pedigree by winning seven of the last ten domestic knockout competitions available. Both of this season's finals required extra time, but Orlando Pirates emerged victorious on each occasion.
In the Carling Knockout Cup Final, the Buccaneers edged out Marumo Gallants with a 1-0 victory after extra time.
The decisive goal came in the 115th minute, credited to the talented young forward, Relebohile Mofokeng, who struck late to secure the coveted trophy.
Earlier in the season, Orlando Pirates successfully defended their MTN8 title by defeating their rivals, Mamelodi Sundowns, in the final.
The match ended 0-0 after extra time, leading to a tense penalty shootout, which Orlando Pirates won 3-1 to claim the prestigious Wafa Wafa crown.
The cup double solidifies Orlando Pirates' dominance in South African knockout competitions, marking a period of sustained success for the Soweto giants.
Orlando Pirates: How Many Millions Have They Bagged
According to IDiski Times, the Carling Knockout Cup win came with a lucrative R6.6 million in prize money. This latest prize adds to the R10 million the club had already earned by winning the MTN8 for a fourth straight season.
This remarkable run of success in the MTN8 has brought a total of R40 million into the club's coffers over the four years.
Orlando Pirates Coach Reacts to Carling Knockout Cup Victory
Speaking after the match, coach Abdeslam Ouaddou heaped praise on his players for sticking to the tactical blueprint throughout the tense battle.
"My speech at halftime, to be honest, was to congratulate the boys and to [encourage them] to continue their efforts because I didn't have anything to reproach them for," said Ouaddou as quoted by SABC Sport.
"But we did make some tactical adjustments, and after we went into extra-time again, we found the net, so it's a [typical] cup game, what can I say? We knew it would not be easy, but at least we won a cup again.
"We created and managed to create many chances in the first half, and unfortunately, we were not efficient in the box, but the plan was respected, exactly how we wanted to start the game."
Next up, Orlando Pirates will face the fan-voted Carling All-Stars XI in the Carling Black Label Cup at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday.
