‘Nwabali is better than Uzoho’- Former Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr

Rohr, who previously led the Nigerian national team and handed Uzoho his international debut, has now openly stated his preference for the Nigerian goalkeepers. 

Rohr, now the head coach of Benin Republic, has been quite vocal about his views on the goalkeeping capabilities within the Nigerian team. 

His experience and insight into the team, particularly from his time as the Nigerian coach, add weight to his opinions. He has commended Nwabali's calmness and control of his area, qualities vital for a goalkeeper at the international level. 

Sports journalist Osasu Obayiuwana (@osasuo on X, formerly Twitter), had a chat with him and tweeted his response. He wrote, “I have to say that @NwabaliBobo  is better than Francis Uzoho,” former @NGSuperEagles #Nigeria coach Gernot Rohr tells me on Wednesday. 

“He is calm and has very good control of his area.”  

This endorsement comes after Nwabali's impressive performances in recent matches, including the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations.

Stanley Nwabali's rise to the position of Nigeria's number-one goalkeeper marks a significant shift in the team's dynamics. Before the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, Uzoho was the first-choice goalkeeper. 

However, following Uzoho's unimpressive displays, coach Jose Peseiro scouted for a new first-choice, eventually settling on Nwabali. 

The Chippa United shot-stopper has since demonstrated his worth, maintaining two clean sheets in three group matches at the AFCON. His performance has not only earned him Rohr's praise but also solidified his position as Nigeria's preferred goalkeeper.
