Dutch football legend Frank de Boer has expressed his surprise that English Premier League clubs failed to sign Victor Osimhen last summer.

Osimhen enjoyed a sensational loan spell with the Istanbul giants last season. He scored a career-high 37 goals, leading Galatasaray to a domestic double by winning both the Super Lig title and the Turkish Cup.

His performance led to several top clubs in Europe vying for his signature last summer, but a move failed to materialise.

The reported €75 million valuation set by Napoli, coupled with significant wage demands, appeared to deter potential suitors, leading to his move to Galatasaray.

De Boer speaks on Osimhen’s transfer

Speaking to Ajax's official website, De Boer, a five-time Eredivisie champion with the Amsterdam club, shared his thoughts on the Turkish league and Osimhen's move.

"Turkey, as a football nation, is a sleeping giant. It’s a large country with plenty of financial resources," De Boer stated.

"There are many good players there, that's for sure. But money sometimes gets thrown around, especially when a club president wants to be elected or re-elected."

"It’s remarkable that Osimhen is playing in Turkey and that no English club managed to lure him away," he added. "You have to respect that choice, he’s a fantastic striker."

Osimhen's transfer to Galatasaray ultimately set a new record, becoming the most expensive signing in the history of the Turkish Super Lig.

Since his move, the Super Eagles forward has broken and set some new records at Galatasaray this season.

He became the fastest goalscorer in Galatasaray's Champions League history with an early strike against Bodo/Glimt and was the first player for the club to score in seven consecutive European fixtures.
