But beyond the footballing drama, the night took an even more chaotic turn when head coach Éric Sékou Chelle was caught in a heated confrontation with a member of the Leopards’ technical team.

Tense playoff ends in heartbreak and head loss

The match itself delivered all the tension expected from a World Cup playoff final. After 120 minutes of fierce, physical football, the score remained 1-1, sending both nations into a nerve-shredding penalty shootout.

Stanley Nwabali produced two crucial saves to keep Nigeria alive, but Semi Ajayi’s sudden-death miss proved decisive as Chancel Mbemba stepped forward to win it for DR Congo.

But just moments before Mbemba struck the final, history-altering penalty, all eyes briefly shifted away from the pitch and towards the touchline.

Cameras captured Super Eagles boss Éric Chelle in a fiery altercation with a member of the DR Congo coaching staff.

Reports claim Chelle picked up a water bottle in anger, appearing ready to hurl it toward his counterpart before he was restrained.

Potential sanctions loom for Chelle

The confrontation stunned fans watching around the world, many of whom had hoped Chelle’s leadership would help steady a tense moment, not escalate it. Instead, the drama overshadowed what was already a gut-wrenching conclusion to Nigeria’s World Cup campaign.

The fallout from the incident may only just be beginning. According to reports from Rabat, the match commissioner is expected to include Chelle’s behaviour in his official report, a move that could lead to disciplinary action from CAF.

If sanctions follow, Chelle could be forced to miss out on the start of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, also due to be held in Morocco in December.
