Nigeria ready to conquer at African Paralympics Games

As the first African Paralympic Games approach, Team Nigeria says preparations are in high gear.

The games will be held in Accra, Ghana, from September 3 to September 12.

According to NAN, the games will serve as a warm-up for the All Africa Games, which will be held in Ghana in 2024.

The President of the Paralympic Committee Nigeria Sunday Odebode said that the athletes had been training for the Games.

He added that they were completely prepared to make the country proud by competing in various Paralympic athletic activities.

He said, “The athletes will participate in wheelchair basketball, wheelchair tennis and amputee athletics, all in both the male and female category.

“I can state categorically that the team is fully ready and well prepared for the Games. Though it is not going to be easy ride but with the level of preparation adequately put in place, our athletes are fully in top gear. They are also well equipped and prepared for the games."

Pulse Sports reported that Nigeria earned seven medals at the recently concluded 2023 World Para Powerlifting World Championships in Dubai.

Nigeria earned two gold medals from Kafilat Almaruf (71kg) and Onyinyechi Mark (57kg), two silver medals from Bose Omolayo (73kg) and Esther Nworgu (41kg), and three bronze medals from Roland Ezuruike (54kg), Folashade Oluwafemiayo (79kg), and Thomas Kure (65kg).

Kafila Almaruf brought the first gold for Nigeria in the championships with a powerful show that also saw her breaking a long-standing world records.

Almaruf won her maiden World Championships championship, lifting 151 kg to shatter France's Souhad Ghazouani's record of 150 kg set in 2013. Ghazouni won bronze, weighing 131 kg.
