Veteran football administrator Nicholas Musonye will remain at the helm of Kenya's Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 preparations, having been retained as chairman of the Nations Steering Committee amid a significant reshuffle of the Local Organising Committee (LOC).

The appointment was officially confirmed in a gazette notice from Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya. This move follows recent signals from CS Mvurya about impending changes to the LOC, which was initially formed for the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN). He cited the need for a more proactive team to drive the preparations forward.

"In some of these leadership roles, there are people who find opportunities to drag out actions and decisions," Mvurya stated. "We want those who serve in the LOC to be people who will work for Kenya and demonstrate the spirit, diversity, unity, and passion of Kenya."

Despite speculation about his potential departure, Musonye has kept his position, with FKF President Hussein Mohammed also retained as his deputy. The most significant change in the committee's structure is the replacement of CEO Myke Rabar, a prominent businessman and event organizer. Anthony Lung’aho Inzihuli will now take over as the Head of the Secretariat.

Mvurya Shares To-Do List for LOC

“Following the CAF inspection report, we will be embarking on accelerated implementation of all infrastructure and operational compliance requirements,” Mvurya further said of what is required from the LOC.

“These include the fast-tracked construction and upgrading of match venues, training facilities, transport and logistics systems, as well as safety, security, and broadcast standards. This is a routine but critical process in the hosting cycle, and Kenya is addressing each recommendation with precision, urgency, and accountability.”

This follows a recent CAF visit which delivered a damning verdict with a report highlighting that no stadium in the country currently meets the required standards for hosting the tournament, adding urgency to the preparations for the 2027 continental showpiece.

The newly-constituted steering committee includes all FKF National Executive Committee (NEC) members. It also features several top figures from Kenyan sports, such as former FKF CEO Lordvick Aduda, Anti-Doping Agency of Kenya CEO Peninah Wahome, and Sports Kenya Director-General Timothy Kilimo.
