Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya announced that changes will be made in a bid to have a team that will deliver a good AFCON 2027 which might see some of the current members of the committee either dropped or new ones added to the existing team.

The CS feels a shakeup is necessary given the magnitude of the continental tournament which Kenya will co-host alongside Uganda and Tanzania between June and July 2027.

The committee was reconstituted in December 2024 by Mvurya’s predecessor Kipchumba Murkomen with its mandate being to deliver the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024) as well as AFCON 2027.

It is a blend of seasoned professionals from various sectors and chaired by veteran football administrator Nicholas Musonye, the former Secretary-General of the Council of East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA).

The LOC also includes prominent figures such as sports journalist Elias Makori, former Harambee Stars coach Jacob “Ghost" Mulee, and former Harambee Starlets player Terry Ouko. The chairpersons of the Media Owners Association and the Kenya Private Sector Alliance will also serve on the steering committee.

Government representation is significant, with the Solicitor General and Principal Secretaries from the ministries of Public Health, ICT, Tourism, Foreign Affairs, Immigration, Investments Promotion, and the East African Community also appointed as members.

The LOC's primary mandate was to create a comprehensive roadmap for both the CHAN 2024 and AFCON 2027 tournaments, among other responsibilities.

The Kenyan LOC is supported by a secretariat led by Mike Rabar and also includes Football Kenya Federation president and CEO, with other members being Dennis Kinyua, Natasha Nyakundi, Lorna Misoi, Jack Mukhongo Munialo, Jimmy Lorot Lokolong, Ivy Kittony, and Nicole Mwende.

The AFCON 2027 LOC has its work cut out given the magnitude of the tournament and will hope to get the necessary support from government to deliver a great event following the high standards set by AFCON 2025 hosts Morocco.
