With Callum Wilson's departure, the only other recognised striker in the squad is Danish U21 international Will Osula. Chelsea's acquisition of Joao Pedro further highlighted the need for reinforcements.

Ekitike, 23, has emerged as a prime target, and Newcastle are reportedly willing to compete with the likes of Liverpool, Chelsea, and Manchester United for his signature. However, acquiring the Frenchman will come at a steep price. His contract includes an £86 million release clause, a figure Newcastle may have to match.

Howe has been a long-time admirer of Ekitike, having previously attempted to sign him in 2022. Ekitike opted for Paris Saint-Germain at the time, prompting Newcastle to acquire Isak for £68 million.

Newcastle have reportedly informed Ekitike's representatives of their renewed interest and outlined their ambition to bring him to St. James' Park. They are also exploring the possibility of negotiating a fee with Frankfurt.

Meanwhile, Elanga watched from the sidelines as his new team-mates secured a comfortable victory against Carlisle in a pre-season friendly.
