‘Misstiano Penaldo’ – BBC Sport slammed for seemingly mocking Cristiano Ronaldo
BBC Sport have typically used impressive puns to describe events but the broadcaster has faced backlash after Cristiano Ronaldo’s extra-time penalty miss against Slovenia.
What happened?
The Portugal captain had a chance to put his side ahead in extra time, only to be thwarted by Jan Oblak.
The legendary forward was in tears afterwards, struggling to contain his emotions and had to be consoled by teammates.
It stayed goalless until the end of extra time, and the Euro 2024 last-16 tie was decided by a shootout, with Diogo Costa saving all three Slovenia penalties to aid Portugal’s progress to the quarter-finals.
Ronaldo, Bruno Fernandes and Bernardo Silva converted from the spot for Roberto Martinez’s side.
Why are the BBC being criticised?
During the post-game analysis, one observer on X (formerly Twitter) — @@adriandelmonte — did not take too kindly with BBC Sport’s ‘Mistiano Penaldo’ pun, tagging the broadcaster’s apparent mocking of the 39-year-old “disgraceful”.
This is disgraceful from the BBC.

Put some respect on the name of a legend who has been at the top of our beautiful game for two decades. Amateur in broadcast terms, expected maybe from a kids’ TikTok page. pic.twitter.com/SRLXl66G1Z
The journalist’s post was met with agreement with a few fans, with one saying it was shameful and another accusing the BBC of lacking class.
BBC English media are always shameless and shameful with their amateurish broadcasting.

What do expect from people who lack class.

However, a few other supporters tried to point out that BBC Sport have typically been creative with puns over the years.
They’ve done this for years. It’s a caption on a screen. Does it really matter?

Match of the day has literally done pun titles to some replays for decades

What comes next?
Portugal face Euro 2024 co-favourites France in July 5’s quarter-final in Hamburg, with the winner playing Spain or tournament hosts Germany in the last four.
Ronaldo has revealed that the European Championship will be his last Euros for the Selecao.
