Victor Wanyama’s former clubs and teammates have showered praise on him following his retirement from football.

Wanyama brought the curtains down on a storied football career that took him to some of the top teams in Europe as well as the MLS for nearly 20 years.

The former Harambee Stars captain had not played competitively since leaving Scottish second tier side Dunfermline Athletic at the end of last season and had been dropping retirement hints in recent months.

He finally made the big announcement on Friday, and his ex-clubs were among those who paid glowing tributes to him.

Spurs and Saints Hail Wanyama

“We had @VictorWanyama and he was nice. We enjoyed it. Wishing you all the very best in your retirement, Victor. Thanks for the memories,” Tottenham, who Wanyama played for from 2016-2020 posted, referring to his viral tweet in 2012.

Southampton, where Wanyama played from 2013-2016 posted: “Wishing you well in retirement, Victor,” while Celtic, a club Wanyama became a fan-favourite posted: “91 appearances, 13 goals. Everyone at #CelticFC sends our very best wishes to Victor Wanyama following his retirement!”

Wanyama’s MLS club CF Montreal, where he played from March 2020 to November 2024, also congratulated him for a wonderful career.

“Happy retirement Victor and congrats on an amazing career,” the club posted on X.

Olunga, Aucho Laud Kenyan Legend

Wanyama’s ex-Tottenham teammate Lucas Moura had nice words to say. “Congrats my brother, incredible career! Very happy to have played with you and have shared great moments. All the best on your next chapter. God bless you,” said the Brazilian forward.

Portuguese defender Jose Fonte, who played with Wanyama at Southampton, also lauded the retiring midfielder. “Congratulations Lion of Muthurwa, with you football was easy,” Fonte posted on Instagram.

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga hailed Wanyama for being a great inspiration to him and other Kenyan players.

“Fantastic career. Inspiration. Legend. All the best in your next steps,” Olunga also posted on Instagram and so was Ugandan midfielder Khalid Aucho.

“Legend for Africa east Africa all the best in your next steps brother,” Aucho posted.
