Former Kaizer Chiefs defender Tsepo Masilela has suggested that the club's inactivity during the January transfer window is a strategic move.

He pointed out that it likely indicates a significant coaching change is planned for next season, with Pitso Mosimane linked with the role.

While title contenders Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates strengthened their squads, Kaizer Chiefs opted not to sign any new players before the window closed on January 31. This decision has drawn criticism from some Amakhosi supporters who were hoping for reinforcements.

Kaizer Chiefs Legend on Why the Club Did Not Make Signings

Kaizer Chiefs Football Manager Bobby Motaung confirmed the club would not be making any additions, sparking further debate about their immediate goals and future direction.

Speaking on the Soccer Beat podcast, Masilela offered a different perspective, arguing that the club is likely preparing for a new era under a new head coach.

"I have a strong feeling Kaizer Chiefs will get a new coach for next season," Masilela stated. The former Bafana Bafana international explained that signing players now could create problems if a new manager arrives with a different tactical philosophy.

"So do they want to make that mistake now of bringing in new players, give them three-year contracts, and then come pre-season, the new coach says ‘I don’t want this guy, I don’t want that guy’?" he questioned.

Masilela warned that such a scenario could become a significant financial burden if new signings are quickly deemed surplus to requirements.

"Everything becomes an expense at that time," he added. "I am thinking from that angle. I am thinking that they have eyed someone. They have someone in mind to take over next season."

Masilela believes the Chiefs' leadership is planning a comprehensive reset, ensuring the next coach has full control over player recruitment. "We don’t want to spend now because the coach will want his own players. So project 2026. I believe they need a strong coach. A manager," he said.

Tsepo Masilela Insists Pitso Mosimane Would Need Time to Rebuild

The name of former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane, who has been frequently linked with the vacant Chiefs job, has resurfaced in these discussions.

"We are all talking about coach Pitso [Mosimane]. I have worked with him [at Bafana Bafana], I know how he manages," Masilela commented.

However, he cautioned that even a coach of Mosimane's calibre would need time to rebuild the team and that fans should manage their expectations.

"We can’t expect coach Pitso to come in and immediately close the gap between us, Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates," Masilela advised.

"These two teams are the high-flyers… We might need to first target position three or two. Then the progress will continue. Maybe coach Pitso will do it."
