Liverpool have altered their stance on the future of Kostas Tsimikas, with Fabrizio Romano revealing the club has now opened the door to a straight loan move for the popular left-back.

The update could pave the way for AS Roma to swoop, though negotiations remain ongoing as the Serie A side carefully weighs its options.

The Greek international, affectionately known to supporters as the ‘Greek Scouser’, has found himself surplus to requirements at Anfield following the arrival of Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth in a £40m deal.

With Andy Robertson’s form in decline, Liverpool sought to refresh their left side of defence. The unintended consequence has been Tsimikas slipping to third-choice in the pecking order.

Initially, Liverpool were adamant a permanent sale was the only route forward. Roma, who had made their interest clear, were told they could not take the player on loan.

The Serie A giants had instead hoped for a temporary switch with an option to buy, but Anfield chiefs resisted, seeking a clean break. Marseille and Nottingham Forest also entered the race, but talks with Roma appeared most advanced.

However, Romano reported on Monday that the Merseysiders have shifted their position.

In a post to X, the transfer expert stated Liverpool “have informed AS Roma tonight about Kostas Tsimikas now available on straight loan.” He added that Roma are “considering whether to proceed and get deal done as they wanted a buy option clause,” while making it clear that the player himself is “pushing a lot as he wants Roma.”

The U-turn signals Liverpool’s willingness to compromise to accelerate squad trimming, particularly with other major transfer pursuits—such as Marc Guehi and Alexander Isak—occupying the club’s focus.

Roma Hesitant Despite Liverpool Concession

For Roma, the latest development is encouraging but not entirely straightforward. José Mourinho’s side were determined to insert a purchase option into any agreement, giving them future security.

A simple loan, while cheaper and easier to structure, leaves the risk of developing the player only for Liverpool to demand his return in 12 months.

Tsimikas, though, is insistent. The 28-year-old is keen on the move, hoping the chance to play regularly in Serie A reignites his career after being reduced to cup outings and late cameos at Anfield.

Tsimikas Caught in Liverpool’s Reshuffle

Tsimikas’ demotion is not a result of underperformance but rather circumstance.

Robertson, despite his status as one of Liverpool’s all-time great full-backs, endured a decline last season that forced the club into the market.

Kerkez’s arrival has solved that problem but created another—leaving three players battling for one slot.
