Lilian Odira: Tokyo Triumph Earns World 800m Champion a Promotion at Kenya Prisons Service
Reigning world 800m champion Lilian Odira has been honoured by the Kenya Prisons Service following her impressive show at the just concluded 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo.
The 26-year-old showcased class in the women’s 800m, winning her heat in 1:57.86 and maintaining the hot streak to the semifinal, which she won in 1:56.85.
Lilian Odira was in a class of her own, coming from the outside lane to take the win in a personal best time of 1:54.62. Her time erased the 42-year-old record of 1:54.68 set by Czech legend Jarmila Kratochvilova in 1983.
To win the race, Lilian Odira silenced Georgia Bell and Olympic champion Keely Hodgkinson, who finished second and third in respective times of 1:54.90 and 1:54.91. Defending champion Mary Moraa finished seventh in 1:57.10.
Lilian Odira Promoted: I Will Now Have to Work Extra Harder
Thanks to her impressive show in Tokyo, Japan, the 26-year-old was promoted from Constable to Sergeant in recognition of her remarkable achievement.
The promotion ceremony, filled with colour and celebration, was presided over by Commissioner General of Prisons Patrick Aranduh at the Kenya Prisons Headquarters in Nairobi.
Speaking after the ceremony, Lilian Odira expressed gratitude to the Commissioner General of Prisons, Patrick Aranduh, for the honour.
She added that being recognised after her medal-winning performance in Tokyo is a huge motivation, and she is determined to keep pushing until she achieves all her goals.
“I’m so grateful, I want to thank my commissioner general and the whole of Kenya Prisons family for the honour. It feels so great…going to fight for your country and department, and getting a reward is a happy moment,” Lilian Odira said.
“I think this is my motivation, and I will now have to work extra hard for greater things. This is just the start of my journey, and I’m aiming to do much better.
“Getting a promotion in my department is a huge honour. My coach, family and kids and my department have been walking with me, and I’m grateful to them.”
With a world record-breaking performance and now a well-deserved promotion, Lilian Odira’s journey is just beginning, and the reigning 800m champion is determined to keep raising the bar.
