Letsile Tebogo Takes Aim at Team USA Stars Noah Lyles, Rai Benjamin and Co Ahead of World Athletics Relays
Reigning Olympic 200m champion Letsile Tebogo has ignited excitement ahead of the upcoming World Athletics Relays in Gaborone, Botswana, after sending a bold message aimed at Team USA.
With elite American athletes such as Olympic 100m champion Noah Lyles, Olympic 400m hurdles champion Rai Benjamin, and Olympic 100m silver medallist Sha'Carri Richardson expected to feature in the competition, Letsile Tebogo made it clear that Botswana will rely on determination and hard work rather than analytics and statistics.
USA Track & Field (USATF) announced a new structure for its 2026 Relay Program, a strategic initiative aimed at dominating the relay events at the 2027 World Athletics Championships in Beijing and the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The program is built on USATF's 'One Team' philosophy, which emphasises building chemistry and cohesion among athletes. The ultimate objective, as outlined in the organisation's 2025-2028 High Performance Plan, is to sweep all six relay gold medals at the LA28 Olympics.
Letsile Tebogo's Bold Message to Team USA
In a confident social media post that quickly gained traction among athletics fans, Letsile Tebogo delivered a message that many interpreted as a playful but pointed challenge to the powerhouse United States team.
“USA is doubling down on 'data,' but you can’t calculate heart. While they’re running numbers, we’re running laps. See you on our home turf this May. 🏟️🇧🇼 #BotswanaSpeed.”
The message suggests that while the United States may rely heavily on performance data and sports science to optimise results, Botswana’s athletes are focused on intense preparation and determination.
The final line also highlights a key advantage for Tebogo and his teammates, the event will take place on Botswana’s home soil, meaning they will enjoy passionate local support.
A Showdown With Global Sprint Stars
The World Athletics Relays are expected to feature some of the biggest names in track and field. Noah Lyles, Rai Benjamin, and Sha’Carri Richardson are among the athletes who could represent the United States.
The likes of Jamaican trio Kishane Thompson, Oblique Seville and Ackeem Blake, and Great Britain’s Zharnel Hughes and Jeremiah Azu will also be expected to compete.
The US has historically been one of the most dominant nations in relay events, thanks to its deep talent pool and strong tradition in sprinting.
However, the emergence of athletes from Botswana and other nations has made the global sprint scene increasingly competitive.
Letsile Tebogo, widely regarded as one of the brightest young talents in athletics, has been a key figure in Botswana’s rise on the international stage. His speed and confidence have helped elevate the nation’s profile in global sprint competitions.
Meanwhile, Botswana’s track and field program has been steadily gaining momentum in recent years, producing athletes capable of challenging the sport’s traditional powerhouses.
