Kenyan Stars Abroad: Jonah Ayunga’s Heartbreak as Celtic Snatch Late Win, Mutahi Bischoff in RB Salzburg Defeat

Kenyan footballers in Europe experienced mixed fortunes over the weekend as Jonah Ayunga, Clement Mutahi Bischoff, and Daniel Anyembe featured in key matches for their clubs. 

While Ayunga’s Celtic edged out St Mirren thanks to a dramatic injury-time goal, Bischoff and RB Salzburg suffered a disappointing loss to WSG Tirol, and Anyembe enjoyed a strong performance in Viborg’s win.

Clement Mutai Bischoff came off the bench for RB Salzburg in their Austrian Bundesliga clash against WSG Tirol on Sunday but was unable to prevent a 3-2 loss. 

Introduced in the 61st minute, Bischoff made an impact with one key pass and three successful crosses, but Salzburg struggled to convert chances in a match marked by fluctuating momentum.

The game at the NV Arena saw Salzburg take an early lead through Emelie Kobler in the 17th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. However, WSG Tirol quickly responded, with goals from Peneau and Nagy putting the hosts ahead 2-1.

 A further goal from Krizaj before halftime extended Tirol’s lead to 3-1.

Salzburg rallied in the second half, creating several opportunities but failing to find the net, while Tirol added two late goals through Ebert and Matavkova, completing a comprehensive victory.

 Bischoff’s late involvement could not reverse the tide, as RB Salzburg slipped to a setback in their title chase.

Jonah Ayunga was introduced off the bench for Celtic in a dramatic Scottish Premiership clash against St Mirren in Paisley. Despite Ayunga’s efforts, Celtic looked unlikely winners until captain Callum McGregor struck a stunning injury-time volley to secure a 2-1 victory.

McGregor’s strike in the 95th minute – a powerful shot from 30 yards that curled into the top corner – ended St Mirren’s resistance and moved Celtic within four points of league leaders Hearts. St Mirren had dominated large parts of the match, creating several clear chances and appearing more threatening, but Celtic’s resilience prevailed.

Ayunga, coming on as a substitute, had limited time to influence the game but will be eager to build on his contribution as Celtic push for honours domestically. St Mirren, meanwhile, remain ninth but look ahead to a cup final meeting against Celtic on December 14.

In Denmark, Kenyan defender Daniel Anyembe was a key figure for Viborg FF during their 5-2 win over Vejle BK in the Superliga. Starting at centre-back, Anyembe recorded four clearances, one blocked shot, and an impressive 89 percent pass accuracy.

The match featured plenty of attacking action, with Viborg quickly responding to an early Vejle opener to take control.

 Goals from Charly Nouck, Sami Jalal Karchoud, Tim Freriks, and Mads Søndergaard helped seal a commanding win for the home side. Anyembe’s defensive composure and distribution were instrumental in keeping Vejle’s threats at bay.
