KCB Survive Late Scare to Clinch 2025 Driftwood 7s Title in Mombasa
KCB Rugby began their 2025 National Sevens Circuit campaign on a high note after edging out a determined Strathmore Leos side 15-14 in a pulsating Driftwood 7s final held at the Mombasa Sports Club.
The Bankers dominated the first half, capitalizing on early handling errors by the Leos. Elvis Olukusi opened the scoring after a well-worked scrum, with his height and pace proving too much for the Leos’ defence.
Floyd Wabwire added a second try shortly after, before Olukusi crossed the whitewash again to complete a first-half brace, giving KCB a 15-0 lead at the break.

Despite KCB’s commanding start, the second half saw a spirited comeback from the Strathmore Leos. Barnabas Owuor’s converted try reignited hopes for the university side. After Wabwire was sin-binned for a high tackle, Strathmore pressed hard and were rewarded with a penalty try, narrowing the gap to just one point.
However, a late knock-on and some resolute KCB defending sealed the narrow win, handing the Bankers their first title of the season and an early lead in the overall standings ahead of next weekend’s Prinsloo 7s in Nakuru.
Bronze Playoff: Kabras Bounce Back to Down Nakuru
Kabras RFC claimed third place after recovering from an early deficit to defeat Nakuru RFC 21-10. Nakuru struck first following a defensive lapse, but Kabras responded with tries from Roy Maruti and Brian Mutua. Maruti converted both and added another try in the second half to secure the win.
Despite late pressure and unconverted tries by Nakuru, Kabras held on to seal a deserved victory.
