Just a day after Besiktas sacked Manchester United legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Fenerbahçe sacked Mourinho on Friday morning after he failed to qualify the team to the UEFA Champions League following a 1-0 loss on aggregate to his former club Benfica on Wednesday.

Mourinho has left with immediate effect, just six games into the news season, having started the league campaign with a win and a loss.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Tottenham boss had a frosty relationship with the powers that be at Fenerbahçe in recent months after feeling dissatisfied with the club’s transfer activities and it was a question of when and not if he would be sacked.

Having survived a Champions League scare after his team bounced back from first leg defeat to beat Feyenoord in the third qualifying round, Mourinho failed to beat Benfica in the playoffs and Fenerbahçe acted swiftly by parting ways with him.

The ‘Special One’ has divided opinion in Turkey since joining Fenerbahce in June 2024 with his touchline antics and post-match comments riling rival fans.

Just a month after he filed a complaint against Galatasaray for accusing him of racism after he claimed their players and technical staff were jumping like monkeys following a goalless draw in the league in February, Mourinho took it a notch higher when he went for the nose of his counterpart in the dugout in April.

He pinched the nose of Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk in a cup match, sparking a brawl that saw both sets of players and technical officials go at each other.
