Sociedad beat Atletico Madrid 4-3 on post-match penalties in the final played at La Cartuja stadium in Seville, having played out a 2-2 draw in regulation time to lift their first trophy since 2020, and a fourth Copa del Rey crown in their history.

Atletico came from behind twice to send the tie to extra time, and then penalties, but Sociedad goalkeeper Unai Marrero saved two spot-kicks in a tense shootout to secure his side the trophy.

Ochieng was not among those who featured on Saturday as he is still recovering from an injury sustained while playing for Harambee Stars against Estonia in the FIFA Series last month but still received his winner’s medal.

Ochieng Continues Record-Setting Season

Having featured in the semi-final, when Sociedad beat Basque rivals Athletic Bilbao 2-0 on aggregate to set up the final with Atletico, Ochieng earned the right to receive a medal.

He becomes the first Kenyan to lift a major trophy in Spain despite featuring in only two matches, and playing a total of 26 minutes, for the senior team.

Ochieng, who has spent most of his time at the club in the Real Sociedad B team, is slowly being integrated in the senior side, getting 25 minutes against Elche on February 7, when he made his La Liga debut, before coming on as a last-minute substitute against Athletic Club in the Copa Del Rey semi-final four days later.
