Liverpool icon and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher has launched a scathing critique of Ruben Amorim, declaring that the Portuguese manager is not qualified to lead Manchester United.

Jamie Carragher's comments followed Manchester United's 1-1 draw with Leeds United at Elland Road on Sunday, a result that extended their poor run to just three wins in their last 11 league fixtures.

In a fiery post-match interview, Ruben Amorim appeared to challenge the club's hierarchy. "I came here to be the manager of Manchester United, not to be the coach of Manchester United," he stated.

"That is clear. I know my name is not [Thomas] Tuchel, [Jose] Mourinho or [Antonio] Conte, but I’m the manager. It’s going to be like this for 18 months or until the board decide to change. I’m not going to quit."

Jamie Carragher Responds to Ruben Amorim

Speaking on Sky Sports, Jamie Carragher dismissed Ruben Amorim's stance. "I don’t think he is in any position whatsoever to be questioning the people who appointed him," Carragher said.

"He’s not good enough to be Manchester United’s manager. He’s barely competent enough to be a Premier League manager right now, and that’s not me being disrespectful to Ruben Amorim."

Manchester United invested heavily in the squad during the 2025 summer transfer window, spending £232.5 million.

A significant portion of that, £206.7 million, was used to acquire attacking players Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo, and Matheus Cunha.

Jamie Carragher argued that Ruben Amorim has received more than enough financial support. "This is a guy who, don’t forget, said at one stage this is possibly the worst United team in history, he’s managing it," he added. "He’s been more than backed."

The former Liverpool defender also took aim at Ruben Amorim's tactical approach, which has been a point of contention for club legends like Paul Scholes, Gary Neville, and Roy Keane. They have frequently criticised his system for clashing with United's traditional fast-paced, attacking style.

"He’s playing a system that is not in the traditions of Manchester United," Carragher explained. "So there was no way that they could recruit all the attacking players, and the wing-backs and maybe the centre-backs that he wanted. It was going to be over a long-term plan... He can’t complain now about not having funds in January."

Currently, Manchester United are sixth in the Premier League table with 31 points from 20 matches. Their next fixture is an away trip to face Burnley at Turf Moor on Wednesday.
