Recent reports have ignited speculation that Pitso Mosimane is on the verge of a sensational return to Mamelodi Sundowns, with some insiders suggesting an appointment could be made before the conclusion of the current Africa Cup of Nations.

This potential reunion follows news that both parties have actively worked to resolve the long-standing financial and legal disputes that soured their relationship after his 2020 departure.

The rumours are gaining momentum due to growing pressure on current head coach Miguel Cardoso, as fans express dissatisfaction with the team's domestic form and recent cup exits.

Lebohang Mokoena Speaks Out on Pitso Mosimane Return to Mamelodi Sundowns

Lebohang Mokoena, speaking on the Soccer Beat, suggested that uncertainty comes with working in elite football, explaining that individuals in technical roles understand how fragile their positions can be and how quickly circumstances may shift.

He noted that organisations therefore tend to plan ahead by identifying possible successors, adding that attention has turned to Pitso Mosimane.

This is because of his previous spell at Mamelodi Sundowns, where he achieved remarkable success, something that inevitably invites comparison with the current coach, Miguel Cardoso.

“So it would be a bit unfair if the decision was made without seeing Cardoso, maybe in the Champions League, because I feel that's the target that Sundowns wants,” Lebohang Mokoena said.

“But with the comments, you know, during the season, you know, with the fans not happy with the style of play of Sundowns and the position they are in now in the league in terms of being really head to head with Orlando Pirates.

“So, mostly the fans are not convinced. And you must know the fans of Sundowns, they have the power as well, you know, to really say, look, I think this coach is not good enough for us, but it would be unfair if it happens now.”

It Would Be Unfair to Sack Miguel Cardoso Now

Lebohang Mokoena indicated that any potential change on the bench would more likely be considered later rather than immediately, suggesting that decisions would depend on how performances unfold over time, particularly on the continental stage.

He felt that an immediate move would lack fairness, but acknowledged that patience tends to wear thin as expectations grow, especially among supporters who long for a more expressive and polished style of football associated with Pitso Mosimane’s previous tenure.

Lebohang Mokoena added that certain squad members have reportedly felt sidelined, hinting at internal tensions that are not always visible to the public, while the stance of the club’s leadership remains unclear.

He noted that developments within the club are being closely monitored and that, should a change be made, Pitso Mosimane is widely viewed as the leading option.

“So, I think it would be unfair if it happened now. But if it happens as the season progresses, it would be understandable because the fans want the shoe-shining Pitso, which is not so convincing on the eye as well,” Lebohang Mokoena said.

“Some players are unhappy with the coach. We don't know how management feels about that, but it will be a decision that we'll all be keeping our eyes on and just to see what's going to be happening. But definitely, Pitso Mosimane is probably the candidate.”

Pitso Mosimane Has All It Takes to Coach Mamelodi Sundowns

Lebohang Mokoena expressed strong enthusiasm at the prospect, explaining that it is always uplifting to see a tactician who has contributed significantly to both Mamelodi Sundowns and the broader South African game.

He added that Pisto Mosimane has helped elevate the country’s profile beyond its borders. He pointed out that the coach’s time abroad allowed him to gain valuable exposure, build extensive networks, and deepen his understanding of different football environments, which adds to his appeal.

Lebohang Mokoena suggested that such experience naturally places him in contention for roles at major teams, noting that a return to Tshwane would make sense given the existing history and familiarity.

He added that the possibility excites him because the domestic league would benefit from stronger leadership, increased competitiveness, and a more compelling approach on the pitch.

“He’s worked with a lot of players. He knows a lot of players. He knows a lot of things. I'm sure wherever he is, he's also hoping that he could be getting a proper offer in terms of one of the big clubs,” he added.

“Obviously, Sundowns would be the first option because he's worked there before. So, yeah, it just gives me a bit of goose bumps because I've been saying this league needs a coach, Pito Mosimane, you know, not only for the antics and stuff, but just to make it more competitive in terms of the style of play, you know.”
