'I'm Not Bad At It'- Haaland Jokes After Smashing 100-Goal Record
Erling Haaland broke Alan Shearer's record by reaching 100 Premier League goals faster than anyone in the competition's history, cementing his status as a modern legend during Manchester City's dramatic 5-4 victory over Fulham on Tuesday.
The 25-year-old Norwegian sensation reached the century mark in a mere 111 appearances, shattering the previous benchmark set by Shearer, who required 124 games to achieve the same feat.
The Norwegian international has enjoyed a scintillating individual campaign so far, boasting 20 goals in 19 games across all competitions. Despite the intense scrutiny that comes with leading the line for the champions, Haaland has remained prolific.
However, he came into the Fulham clash facing an unusual statistical anomaly: a three-game drought. He had blanked in defeats to Newcastle and Bayer Leverkusen, as well as during the weekend win against Leeds—a "dry spell" by his lofty standards.
He silenced any lingering doubts emphatically in the first half of the thrilling encounter. Haaland got back among the goals with a lovely finish, steering home a cross from Jeremy Doku to end his mini-drought.
The goal not only contributed to a wild scoreline but also marked his entry into the exclusive '100 Club' in record time. Speaking after the match, the striker reflected on the achievement with a mixture of pride and his characteristic dry humor.
"A proud moment," Haaland told BBC Match of the Day afterwards.
"The 100 club is a huge thing. To do it this quickly is amazing. I'm proud, I'm happy.
"I've said it many times - a striker for City should score a lot of goals. That's my job, that's what I try to do. And I'm not bad at it!"
While the 100th goal was the main event, Haaland’s overall performance suggested he could have easily added to his tally.
During a dominant attacking display, he hit the post in both halves and also chipped in with two assists, proving his value extends beyond just putting the ball in the net. He currently leads the top flight's scoring charts with 15 goals this season, sitting comfortably ahead of Brentford's Igor Thiago, who is the nearest challenger with 11 strikes.
Since his £51m move from Borussia Dortmund in 2022, Haaland has made breaking records a routine habit. His debut season saw him net a record-breaking 36 goals in just 33 starts. Now, having reached his century 13 matches quicker than the legendary Alan Shearer, the focus turns to how many more he can score. His importance to the team is undeniable, having scored 15 of his side's 32 league goals this term.
Incredible Praise from Guardiola
Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola was quick to laud his striker’s consistency and hunger. Despite the team's reliance on Haaland—highlighted by the 'robot' celebration he performed earlier this season—Guardiola emphasized the quality of the player's performance against Fulham.
The manager was visibly delighted, noting that Haaland was outstanding not just for the goal, but for his all-around contribution to the chaotic win.
"Congratulations, it is incredible," Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola said of Haaland's achievement.
"What can I say? Today he was outstanding. He was unbelievable and got a fantastic goal.
"Enjoy it, hopefully he is hungry to continue getting goals for this club."
A History of Resilience
This milestone comes at a poignant time in Haaland’s career, following a period just over a year ago where critics suggested he was losing his touch.
Following a defeat to Liverpool in December 2024, he endured the leanest run of his City career, scoring just once in seven games. Yet, even in what was termed his "worst" season, he still managed to score 34 times in all competitions, proving his floor is higher than most strikers' ceilings.
Now back to his ruthless best in the 2025-26 campaign, Haaland looks unstoppable. While Shearer still holds the all-time record of 260 goals, Haaland’s current contract runs until 2034.
If he maintains anything close to this strike rate, surpassing the former England captain’s total seems less like a possibility and more like an inevitability.
