"I want to be an example every day" - Bernardo Silva speaks as new Man City captain
Manchester City have done their business early in the transfer window after losing a prominent player and captain in their team.
Following the departure of De Bruyne, Pep Guardiola picked Bernardo Silva to captain Manchester City in the new season.
The Manchester City boss has revealed that his team wants to improve on their performance from last season, following a disappointing campaign.
What Bernardo said as new Man City captain
The Portuguese midfielder embraces the added responsibility, emphasising the importance of leading by example, as reported by Sportal.
"I'm very proud to be the new captain, but I know it's a big responsibility. First and foremost, I'll try to be an example every day. The most important role is to create a good atmosphere in the locker room. There has to be respect between us, even while we're all competing for a place on the team," he said during an open training session with fans.
The 30-year-old Portuguese international, entering his ninth season with the Citizens, says he's inspired by the legacy of the club's previous captains.
"I was lucky enough to share the locker room with players like Vincent Kompany, Fernandinho, David Silva, and Sergio Agüero. The legacy they left is so great that it's not enough for us to finish second, third, or fourth," he stressed.
"The legacy we want to leave to the younger players, to the players who have just been signed, is this: this club needs to win, and that's the motivation every day," he added.
After a disappointing season, in which the club only won the Community Shield, Bernardo Silva feels the team is motivated to bring Manchester City back to its winning ways.
"We are very motivated for this season; I think a lot of good things can happen. We are working hard to give the fans the titles they deserve again," he concluded.
