After years under the microscope at Manchester United, David De Gea has finally found peace in Florence, Italy.
The Spanish goalkeeper says life at Fiorentina has brought him the calm, connection, and happiness he had long been searching for.
De Gea Feeling at home in Florence
Speaking to So Foot Arena via AlfredoPedulla.com, the Spaniard opened up about his journey to rediscovering happiness, both on and off the pitch, after a turbulent exit from Old Trafford.
“As soon as I arrived at Fiorentina I felt at ease,” he admitted, clearly taken by his new surroundings. “The Viola Park is incredible and had a big influence on my choice. But it’s not just that — with the staff, teammates and everyone around the club, it feels like being part of a big family.”
It’s clear the culture in Florence has done wonders for the veteran goalkeeper’s mindset. The club’s close-knit environment, passionate supporters, and calm rhythm of life are far from the high-pressure chaos of Manchester.
“The fans are special,” he said. “I love watching the curva sing.” That sense of unity between football and lifestyle seems to have reignited his love for the game.
Spanish star rediscovering life beyond football
Away from the pitch, De Gea is fully embracing the Italian way of life. “It’s a city everyone wants to visit – small but beautiful, and the food is special. All of this made me want to stay and try to win a trophy,” he added.
After more than a decade in Manchester, De Gea’s year away from football turned into a gift he never expected. “I learned that you can live even without football,” he reflected. “It was one of the best years of my life personally, because I finally had time with my family – something I missed at Manchester United.”
That quiet year helped him reset both mentally and emotionally. Instead of rushing into another deal, he took time to reflect on what truly mattered, and that patience paid off.
When Fiorentina reached out, there was no hesitation. “I was training and knew I was ready,” he explained. “I wanted to return to a top league, and Italy was the dream. When Fiorentina called, the decision was simple.”
Now settled in Florence, De Gea has found both peace and purpose again. For the first time in years, he can just enjoy football, family, and the quiet satisfaction of finally feeling at home.
