Several high-profile stars have left Europe for the riches of the Middle East and the former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson was no exception.

The overriding narrative was that Henderson moved to Al-Ettifaq for the money, a reported £700,000 a week with no taxes. Mouthwatering, to say the least.

However, Henderson has refuted those claims insisting he moved to Saudi Arabia after speaking with Al Ettifaq boss Steven Gerrard about the project.

“Everything I spoke to Stevie about was football and the project. And he actually said he didn’t want to get involved in any of the money stuff.

"It was all about what we could do together to achieve something special and build a club and build the league.”
