How much Faith Kipyegon has earned from smashing two world records in a week

Faith Kipyegon has had an amazing week on the track having broken two world records in a space of sevens days and with it, comes handsome financial rewards.

The two-time world and Olympic champion smashed yet another world record on Friday when she clocked 14:05.20 to win the 5,000m at the Paris Diamond League, the feat coming exactly seven days, after she had lowered Genzebe Dibaba’s eight-year 1,500m world record in Florence after running 3:49.11.

Kipyegon admitted to being surprised by the record in Paris given it was just her third-ever race at the distance and her first 5,000m outing in eight years.

Having promised a big party back home for her world record in Florence, it is surely set to be mega after another world record and she will not be worrying about how to finance it as she has accumulated slightly over Ksh16 million in just one week.

Diamond League races have a prize pool of $25,000 (Ksh3.4 million) of which $10,000 (Ksh1.3 million) goes to the race winner, $6,000 (Ksh832,800) to second place while third place earns $3,500 (Ksh485,800). The cash rewards goes up to eighth place, which fetches $500 (Ksh69,400).

Then there is a bigger reward of $50,000 (Ksh6.9 million) the minimum bonus awarded for breaking a World Record. It means for her feat in Florence and Paris, Kipyegon is guaranteed at least $120,000 (Ksh16.6 million), a combined $100,000 (Ksh13.8 million) for her two world records and $20,000 (Ksh2.7 million) for winning both races.

There is likely to be more cash rewards from her sponsors as she stays on course for the Diamond League Trophy during the Final which also earns $30,000 (Ksh4.1 million) for its winners.

Having won in Doha, Florence and now Paris, the mother of one is already among the most consistent performers who will also share a $200,000 (Ksh27.7 million) prize at the end of the season.

“The $200,000 prize money pot is distributed to the ‘Most Consistent Athletes’ (those who deliver consistent high-level performances throughout the season),” reads part of the World Athletics’ Diamond League regulations.

“There will be 10 athletes in total that receive an award from this prize money pot, one male and one female respectively, in the following disciplines: sprints, hurdles, distance, jumps, and throws.”
