Rulani Mokwena has been hailed by some of his ex-players for his great man-management skills but he was not so successful with ex-Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Andile Jali.

Jali, who played for Sundowns from 2018-2023, left the club after falling out with Mokwena who had cast him aside over a number of disagreements, before the player moved to Moroka Swallows.

The midfielder, who has since retired, has opened up on what really led to their fallout, bringing into focus how Mokwena likes to manage his players.

“Me and him had fun but in the end, we did not have fun,” Jali said on the Arena Sports Show. “Because I saw that he was becoming more of a father to a person who is old. He can’t be a father to me. No, I have kids, I have my family and a wife.”

Jali Enjoyed Great Playing Career

Jali feels Mokwena went overbroad when it came to his demands from him as he was experienced enough to know what was required and therefore did not need to be shepherded around.

“He wants to be my father again, no. It can’t be. It won’t work, it did not work. You can’t be a father; you want to tell me what to do. I am old, I know what to do and what not to do,” Jali insisted.

Jali was a highly regarded midfielder, who made 139 appearances for Sundowns, winning numerous trophies, including five league titles, before his fallout with Mokwena brought an end to his stint at the club.

He briefly played for Swallows before the club ran into financial problems and sacked the entire team and he would later find refuge at Chippa United, where he played 13 times before calling time on his career that also included five years at Orlando Pirates and four at Belgian club K.V Oostende.
