He attacks, I defend — Rooney explains dynamics with Ronaldo at Man United

Wayne Rooney's revelations about the dynamics of his partnership with Cristiano Ronaldo at Manchester United have stirred the pot, offering an insider's view on what made the duo tick during their trophy-laden years at Old Trafford. 

Between 2004 and 2009, Rooney and Ronaldo became icons of the club's success, securing three Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League, among other accolades. 

Their on-field chemistry was undeniable, but it's Rooney's insight into their contrasting roles, especially in defensive duties, that sheds new light on the strategic depth behind Sir Alex Ferguson's lineup.

Rooney, in a candid chat on the Stick to Football podcast, underscored the tactical trust Ferguson placed in him over Ronaldo in defensive scenarios. While Ronaldo was the unmatched offensive spearhead, Rooney's defensive diligence offered balance. 

"[He] would win you the game," Rooney acknowledged, per the Daily Mail, appreciating Ronaldo's unmatched threat upfront. Yet, it was Rooney's willingness to fulfil the gritty defensive work that underscored their complementary roles. His versatility allowed Ronaldo to focus on what he did best – terrorising opposition defences.

“From a defensive point of view there was just more trust [in me]. Obviously, if I played out wide, I would do my job, I would get back and help out defensively where Cristiano probably wouldn’t do it, and then he’s a threat [going forward], he pins their full-back, back.”

“'I wanted to play in my position [as a centre forward], but that’s where the manager probably got it right in terms of the team winning and being successful, we probably needed that. I wasn’t really interested in individual awards, I always wanted to win with the team, that was always my goal.

“ wouldn’t say I was a natural goal scorer, I just wanted to get on the ball. If I was more selfish, I potentially could have scored a lot more goals, but I just wanted to play. The number of times I had midfielders telling me to go away or, "I’ll play it through to you, you need to stay up front.”
