Harry Maguire Accepts Huge Pay Cut to Extend Manchester United Contract
Manchester United have officially confirmed that defender Harry Maguire has signed a new contract, securing his future at the club.
The new agreement is a one-year deal that includes an option for the club to extend it by an additional 12 months. Maguire's previous contract was set to expire this summer, which would have made him a free agent.
Negotiations had been ongoing for some time, with the new terms reportedly involving a reduction from his previous £180,000-a-week salary. According to transfer news guru Fabrizio Romano, Maguire has accepted a huge pay cut that will see him now warn between £100,000 and £120,000 per week.
Harry Maguire Thrilled to Extend Stay
Maguire, who joined United from Leicester City in 2019 for a then-world-record fee for a defender of £80 million, has re-established himself as a key figure under interim manager Michael Carrick. The 33-year-old has been a senior presence in the backline, particularly during the absences of Matthijs De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez, helping the team push for Champions League qualification.
"Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour," Maguire stated. "It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day. I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together."
"You can feel the ambition and potential of this exciting squad," he added. "The determination throughout the whole club to fight for major trophies is clear for everyone to see and I am confident that our best moments together remain ahead of us."
The decision to retain Maguire was also influenced by the impending departure of Casemiro. The club was keen to avoid losing too much experience from the dressing room and viewed keeping the defender as a priority, provided he would agree to revised terms.
How Man United Plan to Utilise Defender
Jason Wilcox, Manchester United's director of football, praised the centre-back's character. "Harry represents the mentality and resilience required to perform for Manchester United," Wilcox said. "He is the ultimate professional who brings invaluable experience and leadership to our young, ambitious squad."
The contract extension is seen as a mutually beneficial arrangement. Maguire, who previously turned down a £30 million move to West Ham in 2023 and rejected interest from AC Milan and Saudi club Al Qadsiah in January, was eager to remain in the north-west where his family is settled.
For Manchester United, the deal secures a top-level player who can mentor younger defenders like Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven. With Maguire's future settled for up to two more years, the club can now shift its focus to strengthening other key areas of the squad, such as central midfield and the left flank, during the upcoming summer transfer window.
