Gor Mahia midfielder Mike Kibwage has hailed Charles Akonnor’s impact since taking charge of the club, describing him as “one of the best” coaches around as the club continues chasing their record 22rd league title.

Kibwage, who signed for Gor Mahia from Tusker following the expiry of his contract in Ruaraka, has played a key role in their good form, starting all seven games alongside Sylvester Owino at center back and Byrne Omondi in goal.

Speaking to Pulse Sports after helping his side beat Kenya Police at Nyayo Stadium in Nairobi on Sunday, Kibwage explained just how sweet it was beating the Law Enforcers just a week after being frustrated to a draw by Ulinzi Stars.

“It's a great feeling to be back with victory  and again to win especially before going into the international break,” Kibwage said.“ I think the previous match we were so upset about (the result against Ulinzi Stars)  but today it has been fantastic and we appreciate  it.”

Since joining Gor Mahia, Kibwage has been part of a backline that has conceded just three goals all season alongside Owino and Omondi. Kibwage has attributed their understanding down to their time for Harambee Stars during CHAN 2024 on homesoil, during which they reached the semi finals.

“Of course it hasn't been easy during games, but adapting to life at Gor Mahia was not hard because before, most of us had already gelled  at CHAN.

“We were together for  like two  months  before the CHAN and everything. So  we already bonded at that time. So life here has been fantastic because  many of the players we have played together.  So it's easy. “

Meanwhile, the Kenyan international has heaped praise on Akonnor’s impact at the club, having brought a sense of stability after a rocky 2024/2025 that saw them change head coaches on four separate occasions.

“Of course, first of all I want to appreciate him.  He's a great coach and think so far also one of the best.  He has really put the house in order  and that's why you can see the results coming.”

Meanwhile, Kibwage, who was named in the 23-man squad for Kenya’s upcoming friendly games against Equatorial Guinea and Senegal in Turkey, has earmarked the importance of those two games as they continue preparing for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) again on home soil.

“I think it's a great  friendly and a great challenge because we are looking forward for the AFCON 2027, which we are hosting here.

“ So we have to  compete among the best  for us to be the best.  So I think it will be a great feeling and a great game  and a preparation for  the AFCON”.

With Akonnor’s influence growing and key players like Kibwage hitting peak form, Gor Mahia look well-placed to defend their title and extend their domestic dominance.

The international break offers them a brief pause — but all signs point toward a determined and united K’Ogalo squad ready to make history once again.
