Harambee Starlets Receive Major Cash Boost Ahead of Australia Clash in FIFA Series Final
Kenya’s national women’s football team, Harambee Starlets, have received a significant financial boost as they prepare for a historic showdown against Australia’s Matildas.
On Sunday, April 12, 2026, the team officially acknowledged receiving Ksh 1.5 million in collective rewards following their impressive performance in the ongoing FIFA Series 2026.
Harambee Starlets: Government and Federation Show Support
The Ministry of Youth Affairs, Creative Economy, and Sports, led by CS Salim Mvurya, alongside Defence CS Soipan Tuya, awarded the team Ksh 1 million. Additionally, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) bolstered the pot with a further Ksh 500,000.
In a heartfelt post on their official social media pages, Harambee Starlets expressed their gratitude, stating: "Your support means everything to the team. A heartfelt thank you for the reward and the additional support from FKF."
Harambee Starlets Silence India in FIFA Series Opening Match
The rewards follow a stellar 2-0 victory over world No. 67 India on Saturday at the Nyayo National Stadium. The Beldine Odemba-coached Harambee Starlets displayed tactical superiority from the opening whistle.
Martha Amunyolete opened the scoring just two minutes into the match, while Terry Engesha sealed the win in the 57th minute.
This victory not only booked Kenya’s place in the FIFA Series final but also served as a critical warm-up for the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON), scheduled for July in Morocco.
Harambee Starlets now face their toughest challenge yet, a final clash against Sam Kerr’s Australia on Wednesday, April 15. The Matildas, ranked 15th globally, entered the final after a clinical 5-0 demolition of Malawi.
The presence of global superstar Sam Kerr, who scored in the semi-final, adds a layer of intensity to the match. While the gap in rankings is significant, with Kenya currently at 134th, Harambee Starlets are riding a wave of local support and newfound financial motivation.
Meanwhile, the FIFA Series is an inaugural initiative designed to foster inter-confederation competition. For Kenya, hosting this leg has been a statement of intent and with the final just 48 hours away, Harambee Starlets are ready to prove that they can compete with the world's best.
