At the moment, Gor Mahia are on top of the table with 57 points, with AFC Leopards a close second with 55 points. Gor Mahia was held to a 0-0 draw by Kariobangi Sharks on April 4, 2026, dropping crucial points in their title defence.

Meanwhile, AFC Leopards capitalised on that slip by securing a 2-0 victory over Murang'a Seal on April 5, moving within two points of the league leader; however, Charles Akonnor remains unfazed about that pressure.

Charles Akonnor explained that Gor Mahia are in a strong position at the top of the standings and remain confident of extending their advantage if they secure victory in their upcoming clash against Tusker FC.

He noted that the team is focused on building a comfortable lead while maintaining a disciplined approach, adding that preparations for the next fixture will be thorough as they aim to handle each game with careful planning and consistency rather than looking too far ahead.

“But for us, we know that AFC Leopards is doing a lot of things in their power to overtake us, but that will be a difficult one. We will not allow that because we've worked so hard to get here. I know they've also done that. But we're looking at ourselves, what we've done, what we've achieved. This year, we've done a lot of work where we've not lost a game,” Charles Akonnor said.

“And the confidence of these boys, the way they process things and everything has been good. And so, we are very confident. But of course, confident at the same time aware of watching yourself, watching, have a corner eye to see what is going on at your back and everything.”

Charles Akonnor stated that Gor Mahia are fully ready and approaching each fixture with the intensity of a decisive encounter, while acknowledging the logistical difficulties they have faced regarding training and match venues.

He pointed out that despite those setbacks, the team has consistently adapted by adjusting their tactics to suit different playing conditions, which has helped them secure positive outcomes in challenging environments against sides like Shabana FC.

The Gor Mahia coach further expressed concern over the quality of some pitches and the circumstances that led them to play under such conditions, but emphasised that the squad remains focused and determined to cope with whatever situation they face.

The coach added that the players have already been mentally prepared and given clear tactical instructions ahead of the upcoming match against Tusker FC, expressing strong confidence that the team will execute their plan effectively and continue delivering positive results.

“Yeah. We managed it. We changed the style of play. We went to Shabana. The field was also not too good. We changed our style of play. We got a nice result. And we'll do that with this. Yes, we're a team that likes to play. We want a better field to play. How we were taken there, I don't know. I don't know why,” Charles Akonnor said.

“It's very, very strange. But we'll manage it. And we'll get the next results. I'm confident about that. And for that matter, we've started psyching the boys. We've been telling them exactly what to do. So we have a plan for how to approach this game. We will do it effectively, and we'll get the next results.”
