Gor Mahia Boss Charles Akonnor Blasts Posta Rangers After 1-1 Draw: 'This Is Not Good for Football'
Gor Mahia’s relentless winning streak was finally halted on Thursday as they battled to a 1-1 draw against a resilient Posta Rangers at Nyayo National Stadium in the Football Kenya Federation Premier League match.
Posta Rangers took a shocking early lead in the seventh minute through a clinical header by Jackson Macharia, capitalising on a defensive lapse by the league leaders.
Despite trailing for the majority of the match, Gor Mahia dominated possession but struggled to break down Posta Rangers’ deeply entrenched defense.
The game was marred by controversy as Gor Mahia supporters and players grew increasingly frustrated with Posta Rangers’ perceived time-wasting tactics.
Goalkeeper Bixente Otieno was even cautioned with a yellow card for his antics before eventually leaving the pitch with an injury.
The tension finally boiled over in the 87th minute when Ghanaian forward Ebenezer Assifuah pounced on a misjudged cross to chest home the equaliser. Although the fourth official added a significant 10 minutes of stoppage time, Posta hung on to secure the point.
Gor Mahia Coach Addresses Posta Rangers’ Alleged Time-Wasting Tactics
Speaking to the media after the match, Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor criticised the opposition for repeatedly slowing down the match, arguing that such behavior disrupted the flow of play and undermined the quality of the contest.
Charles Akonnor noted that the fixture lacked continuity in both halves, expressed disappointment that supporters did not get the competitive spectacle they expected, and suggested that teams should avoid deliberate delays that detract from the spirit and entertainment value of the game.
“Football is 90 minutes and I think maybe if you look at the first half, we played 20 to 30 minutes and if you look at the second half, it was the same. This is not good, it is not good for football,” Charles Akonnor revealed.
“I mean, there are people who have spent their money to come and watch the game. It’s not the same. I mean, if you want to waste time, there are so many ways to do that but not like they did.”
Meanwhile, Gor Mahia will next face Ulinzi Stars on March 15, followed by a clash with Shabana as they look to cement their lead at the summit.
Despite the dropped points against Posta Rangers, Gor Mahia remain in a commanding position with a seven-point cushion over rivals AFC Leopards and a crucial game in hand.
