Gabby Thomas Reveals Plan to Run Longer Distance in 2026 After Success in 200m
Having conquered the 200m, Olympics champion Gabby Thomas is considering trying out a longer distance in 2026 as she continues to challenge herself.
The American, who has Olympics gold and World Championships bronze and silver in the 200m, has also previously featured in the 100m but without much success.
However, she has had good results in the 400m and also won gold medals in the 4x400m both at the Paris 2024 Olympics and the 2024 World Relays.
Gabby Thomas on Why She Wants to Try 400m
Now, Thomas feels 2026 is the year when she should try out 400m more prominently and she is encouraged by her recent good results over the distance.
“I have had success in the 400m this past season running 49.01 so I might, maybe it is time to try it,” Thomas revealed while speaking to the Marathon Handbook.
“And we have an off-year so I think it is really a good opportunity for me to see what I am capable of and just having a new challenge.”
What Else is Olympics Champion Planning?
Thomas ran the 400m once last season, managing a personal best 49.14 seconds at Grand Slam Track in Kingston last April which is giving her confidence of doing well over the distance.
The 29-year-old saw her 2025 season disrupted by an Achilles injury suffered just before the World Championships but having fully recovered and returned to training, she is looking forward to a successful 2026 campaign.
“We are launching Athlos which is going to be an awesome track and field event for women in the US and it will be a lot of fun then we have the Ultimate Championships. But I take it day by day, it is all part of the journey and process,” she added regarding her other plans for the new season.
