“I don't think the gap between Chelsea and Real Madrid is as big as people think,” Cole told BT Sport.
When asked if Lampard can get more out of the players, Cole replied: “He certainly can. Like Frank said in his interview, it’s a difficult season for Chelsea and they’re in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
“You have to put that into perspective with where the club has been for the last 20 years. There is a big change. We’ve had 30 players change, managers, owners, everything , it’s a big, big change.”
Verdict - anything can happen
The beauty of the Champions League is that while Real Madrid are overwhelming favourites, anything can happen in football.
Joe Cole is right not to totally write Chelsea off but not entirely accurate in his assessment of where both clubs are at the moment.
However, if the Blues can get any kind of result to take back with them to Stamford Bridge then, that could make life really difficult for Carlo Ancelotti's men.
He expressed his love for the club, saying he is a fan and that he enjoyed his stay there, but explicitly stated that a return to the Stamford Bridge dug-out is not in his plans.
