The former Chelsea forward attended his first-ever DStv Premiership match at Loftus Versfeld on Monday and was impressed by the standard of play.

His reaction was seen as an indirect endorsement of Miguel Cardoso's tenure at Mamelodi Sundowns amid speculation linking Pitso Mosimane with the role.

Kalou noted that the technical skill and intensity on display from both teams demonstrated why the South African national team, Bafana Bafana, has been performing so strongly in recent years.

Under the guidance of coach Hugo Broos, Bafana Bafana has enjoyed a successful period, highlighted by a third-place finish at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and a solid start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign.

Ivorian Football Legend Hails Mamelodi Sundowns Talent

The 38-year-old believes the strength of the domestic league is a significant factor in the national team's resurgence. Speaking to SuperSport TV after the game, Kalou shared his positive impressions.

"Well, it's really fun. It's my first game, my first PSL game, so I was very excited to see that and beautiful football," he said.

"Sundowns played very well today. I thought they didn't force that much. They could have scored more goals, but it was very nice to see the game."

He added that the match confirmed his view of the league's high standards and its role in producing top talent.

"It was very nice to see them, to see the game, and you can see that the South African league is very competitive and we have got very good players. Now, I understand why Bafana Bafana have been doing so well in the past couple of years, because the league is very strong."

Kalou’s comments have added weight to the view that Mamelodi Sundowns are on the right path under Miguel Cardoso, with the quality on display serving as a timely reminder that stability may be just as important as any potential move to bring Pitso Mosimane back to the club.
