Former Celtic star Victor Wanyama has offered a glowing endorsement of incoming manager Wilfried Nancy, providing a welcome boost for fans uncertain about the club's next appointment.

It is widely expected that Nancy will be confirmed as the new Celtic manager next week, with Martin O'Neill's interim spell set to conclude after this weekend's match against Hibernian. The Frenchman's name was initially met with surprise when it first emerged, as many supporters were unfamiliar with the CF Montreal coach.

Despite O'Neill's successful tenure, the club is moving forward with Nancy, a decision that has left some fans apprehensive. Concerns have been raised about his relative inexperience at the highest level and whether he can handle the unique pressures of managing Celtic.

However, Wanyama, who played under Nancy in the MLS, has shed light on the manager's capabilities, which may help to ease some of those worries.

Speaking to Telecom Asia, Wanyama lamented Nancy's departure from CF Montreal, highlighting the positive foundation he had built. "When we had French coach Wilfried (Nancy), we had really built something nice together," he said. "But when he left, it’s like we started from zero again."

The Kenyan international also detailed the significant achievements the club enjoyed under Nancy's leadership.

"I had very good moments at Montreal, but some of the best moments we had included winning the Canadian Trophy by beating our rivals Toronto. This was such a historic moment for the club, and I am glad I was part of it."

"We also set several milestones for the club, like picking the highest number of points in the team's history as well as the most number of away wins ever. We brought in a new mentality into the team, and this helped the club grow."

Current Celtic right-back Alistair Johnston also played under Nancy at Montreal, and it is likely the club sought his opinion before finalising their decision.

While Nancy's success in the MLS is clear, the challenge at Celtic represents a significant step up. He will be expected not only to win but to do so with an attacking style, drawing comparisons to his predecessor, Ange Postecoglou. The hope among the Celtic faithful is that he can deliver a similar brand of success.
