Fans hail magician Ozil on retirement at 34
Former Real Madrid, Arsenal, and Germany midfielder Mesut Ozil announced his retirement from football on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.
Ozil at the age of 34 announced his retirement on his social media platforms and received an outburst of congratulations from fans and colleagues.
He had a successful career highlighted by winning the Spanish La Liga title with Real Madrid in 2012 and four FA Cup triumphs with Arsenal.
For Germany, Ozil made 92 appearances and was an integral part of the team that lifted the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
The statement by Ozil on social media said, "It has been an amazing journey filled with unforgettable moments and emotions."
"I've had the privilege to be a professional football player for almost 17 years now and I feel incredibly thankful for the opportunity.
"But in recent weeks and months, having also suffered some injuries, it's become more and more clear that it's time to leave the big stage of football."
