Faith Kipyegon Destroys The Field But Misses World Record In Xiamen

Faith Kipyegon came close to the 1,000m world record when she ran a solo race to claim victory at the season-opening Xiamen Diamond League in China on Saturday.
Kipyegon clocked 2:29.21 to miss the world record by the finest of margins after showing a great finishing kick to display no signs of rustiness in what was her first race of the season.
The 31-year-old displayed her intentions of running a first race from the start, when she took the lead early before slowing down, but when the bell was rung, she had no equals as she put on the afterburners to leave her rivals behind.

Kipyegon, who had the second fastest time over the distance, having run 2:29.15 in 2020, could not manage to lower it and possibly go for the world record, which she missed by 0.17 five years ago, having to settle for the third fastest time in history.
It was, however, a good race for the three-time Olympics 1,500m champion who looked in great shape in her first race since September 2024.
Australia’s Abby Caldwell finished second in 2:32.94 ahead of countrywoman Sarah Billings, who stopped the clock at 2:33.45.
