Akani Simbine Maintains Hot Streak as He Floors Ferdinand Omanyala, Christian Coleman and Letsile Tebogo at Xiamen Diamond League
Akani Simbine maintained his great start to the campaign when he stormed to victory in 100m at the season-opening Xiamen Diamond League on Saturday.
Simbine clocked 9.99 seconds for first place to beat Kenya’s Ferdinand Omanyala, who was second in 10.13 seconds, as Jeremiah Azu of Great Britain completed the podium in 10.17 seconds.
American Christian Coleman was fourth in 10.18 seconds while Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo could only finish seventh in 10.20 seconds.
It was a much slower time for Simbine, who had clocked 9.90 seconds at the Botswana Golden Grand Prix on April 12, which was and still is the world’s fastest time this year.
Simbine continues to show great form early in the season with two sub-10 performances in a space of two weeks, with compatriot Bayanda Walaza the only other athlete to have dipped under 10 seconds in 2025.
Meanwhile, Omanyala was playing second fiddle to Simbine for the second straight race, but he ran a slower time compared to the 10.00 seconds that he managed in Botswana, while Coleman, who had recorded 10.06 at the Tom Jones Memorial last week, also had a slow time.
Meanwhile, it was a bad day at the office for Olympics 200m champion Tebogo who faded off in his second 100m race of the season.
While he finished seventh, it was an improved time for Tebogo compared to the 10.55 seconds that he managed at the Patch Invitational meet on April 16.
