Wrexham have been on a roll since they were acquired by Hollywood actors Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds in 2020, earning historic three successive promotions.

The club were acquired when playing in the fifth tier National League and from 2022 to 2025, through: won the 2022-23 National League, finished second in the 2023-24 League Two and 2024-25 League One, securing a spot in the EFL Championship.

Now, they want to complete the fairytale story by reaching the Premier League next season and they are in sixth position in the Championship which gives them a chance to fight their way via the playoffs.

With that reality, the big-spending club have brought in a number of players with Vyner one of them and at 28 and with 264 games for Bristol under his belt, former Wrexham defender Ben Tozer is backing them to lift them to glory.

“Zak Vyner is a very, very good Championship defender and if he is there to help them get promoted and still be a part of the club if they get promoted then so be it,” Tozer told the BBC.

“This is just the nature of the beast I guess because if you think about last season, the team that got promoted from League One and what is left now playing week in, week out is not very many but can you begrudge them (club)?

“It is seems like everything is still going in the right direction and it [Vyner’s signing] improves the squad and definitely when he gets his chance, he will be fantastic in the first team as well.”

Vyner joined Bristol as a kid in 2006 and went through the ranks at the club. He initially struggled for game time, moving on loan to Accrington Stanley, Plymouth, Rotherham United and Aberdeen, before turning to establish himself as a key player and left after playing 264 games.

With six months remaining on his contract, Bristol tried to offer him a new deal but he turned it down, and with the club not ready to lose him for free, they accepted a £1.5 million (Ksh267 million) offer from Wrexham.
