This is not the first time the former Togo captain has acknowledged his Nigerian heritage. During a novelty match organised by BetKing to celebrate Austin Jay-Jay Okocha’s 50th birthday, Adebayor openly discussed his roots.

He explained that although he was born and raised in Togo, both of his parents are fully Nigerian: “My father’s name is Adeyi Adebayo and my mother’s name is Alice Semiola Adekani. So, I am a pure Yoruba man. I was just born in Togo, grew up in Togo, and was raised by Nigerian parents.”

Kanu inspires Togolese legend

Responding to social media debates comparing the two former Premier League stars, Adebayor shut down the conversation with humility and respect: “I beg you people, Kanu is my idol and my god of football. So please, no comparison needed here.”

Kanu, famously known as Papilo, is one of Africa’s most decorated players, with trophies from Arsenal, Ajax, Inter Milan and an Olympic gold medal with Nigeria.

While Adebayor enjoyed a glittering career himself, he continues to honour both his roots and the icons who shaped him.
