Dominic Frimpong Death: Police Launch Manhunt Following Deadly Berekum Chelsea Ambush
Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong has tragically died after suspected armed robbers ambushed the Berekum Chelsea team bus.
The 20-year-old sustained fatal gunshot wounds during the attack, which occurred as the team was returning from a league match on Sunday.
According to a statement from the club, the bus was "blocked" on the road by "masked men wielding guns and assault rifles."
The assailants opened fire as the driver attempted to reverse, forcing players and staff to flee into nearby bushes for safety. Authorities confirmed that 30 players and officials were on board when the attack took place. Frimpong was rushed for medical attention but succumbed to his injuries.
Police Launch Investigation Into Dominic Frimpong Death
Police have launched a manhunt for the six suspects involved and have deployed additional personnel to the area, vowing that the "perpetrators will be arrested within the shortest possible time."
The Ghana Football Association (GFA) expressed its "profound shock and deep sorrow" over the incident, remembering Frimpong as a "promising young talent whose dedication and passion for the game embodied the spirit of our league."
The team was traveling back from a 1-0 away loss to Samartex in Samreboi, a journey of approximately 270 kilometers (170 miles).
The attack has reignited serious concerns about road safety for sports teams in Ghana, with several clubs, including FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, and AshantiGold, having faced similar ordeals in recent years.
The GFA has pledged to review and enhance security protocols for clubs traveling to competitions across the country to "prevent such tragic occurrences in the future."
The Ghana Premier League also offered its "unwavering backing" to Berekum Chelsea and urged security agencies to take "urgent steps to safeguard all participating clubs."
Frimpong, a forward, had joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC in January and was set to remain with the club for the rest of the season.
He had scored two goals in 13 appearances. Aduana FC released a statement mourning his loss, saying, "Our prayers are with his family, Berekum Chelsea, and the football community. Rest well."
