The Yellow Submarines had nothing but points, pride, and a send-off to their fans to play for, as their league position could not worsen or be improved.

Atletico Madrid, on the other hand, could still finish second and needed to win to achieve this. They led for a considerable portion of the game, but a late Villarreal goal condemned them to a third-place finish.

How it happened

Villarreal started brilliantly and dominated early proceedings. They showed purpose and cut through Atletico Madrid, resulting in a Nicolas Jackson goal in the 9th minute of the game.

The visitors had resorted to counter-attacks, and it paid off in the 19th minute when Angel Correa finished off a sweeping team move assisted by Antoine Griezmann.

Diego Simeone's side looked like scoring in every offensive transition, and they soon went in front. Griezmann set up Correa again with another counter-attacking move.

Atletico looked set for a win, but a 70th Axel Witsel red card left them vulnerable at the back, and they eventually conceded a late equaliser to youngster Jorge Pascual.
