CHAN 2024: Why Benni McCarthy Wants Harambee Stars to Stay Humble After DR Congo Win

Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy is calling on his charges not to get carried way by their win over DR Congo in the 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN 2024).

Kenya had a great start when Austin Odhiambo’s goal handed them a 1-0 win over the Leopards at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday to send them joint top in Group A with three points, same as Morocco, who beat Angola 2-0.

While the nation is in celebratory mood, McCarthy is not and it is the message he is sending to his team, urging them to stay humble and focused on the upcoming matches as they present an even greater test.

"We’ve made a good start, but we have to stay grounded. There are tough games ahead, but if the boys keep playing like this, we can go far,” McCarthy said after the match.

"I’m proud of my team — many of them were stepping onto such a big stage for the first time. Beating one of the tournament favourites is massive for us. We were nervous at the start, but once the boys settled, they showed real bravery," he added.

Harambee Stars next take on Angola on Thursday and head into the match with confidence high after their opening day victory that saw them earn Ksh1 million each from President William Ruto.

The COSAFA Cup winners, however, present a different test as they are looking to make amends for their loss to Morocco while Kenya have the weight of expectations on their shoulders thanks to the fine start.

Harambee Stars have played Angola twice, losing one and winning the other, the first meeting ending 2-1 in favour of Kenya, while the Palancas Negras won 1-0, both played 2011.
