CHAN 2024: Chris Erambo Credits Kasarani Crowd for Lifting 10-Man Harambee Stars v Angola

Tusker midfielder Chris Erambo says the electric atmosphere at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, played a crucial role in helping Harambee Stars battle to a 1-1 draw with Angola despite being reduced to 10 men early in their Group A clash.

The high-intensity match saw Kenya forced into damage control after Marvin Nabwire’s controversial dismissal in the 21st minute, following a VAR review that upgraded his yellow card to red. Angola had already taken the lead through Jó Paciência in the seventh minute, finishing off a slick move involving Beni Jetour.

Kenya’s response was swift — just five minutes later, Austine Odhiambo equalised from the penalty spot after VAR confirmed a foul in the box by Angola’s Mafuta.

From there, the Harambee Stars had to dig deep, with goalkeeper Byrne Omondi producing crucial saves to keep the score level.

Head coach Benni McCarthy admitted it was the toughest test so far. “This was the toughest game I’ve played in,” McCarthy said. “You’re trying to coach and keep the players focused with 10 men. It wasn’t easy, but I have to praise the players for their effort.”

Erambo, who came on in the 63rd minute to inject fresh energy, credited the home fans for pushing the team over the line.

“The fans helped us a lot, especially after being reduced to 10 men,” he said. “I think they motivated us, and I hope they will support us against Morocco. That next game will not be easy, but we need those fans because it will be very tough.”

Kenya remain top of Group A with four points from two matches, ahead of Morocco and DR Congo. A win over Morocco in their next fixture would seal their spot in the quarter-finals, while Angola, on one point, must beat DR Congo to keep their CHAN 2024 hopes alive.
