How it happened
Man United were looking to get back to winning ways in the league after their 7-0 harrowing defeat to Liverpool last weekend.
That defeat left an air of negativity around the supporters and the aim was to get things back to normal against Southampton in front of home fans.
As for the visitors, a win would lift them out of the bottom three after their struggles all season.
United started on the front foot as expected but failed to create any meaningful opportunities and should have actually gone behind after Theo Walcott was presented with an excellent chance but David De Gea pulled off a nice save to deny him.

The Red Devils who went with an ultra-attacking side tried to fashion a response to the Saints' attacks and Raphael Varane went close to opening the lead, missing by inches.
Soon after, came the big moment of the first half. Casemiro saw red for the second time this season, for a studs-up challenge on Southampton midfielder Carlos Alcaraz, which means he will miss United's next four domestic games.
It was a low point in what had already been a frustrating half for United. one that ended with optimistic shouts for a penalty, but their protests were swiftly waved away by referee Taylor.

After the break, Southampton stretched United, who were clumsy in possession and appeared rattled by the constant pressure from their opponents, with James Ward-Prowse going close.
Bruno Fernandes should have scored for the hosts but he saw a fine effort hit the post.

Despite the abandonment of caution and clear attacking intent from both sides, neither made a breakthrough and Southampton will be the happier of the two sides.
