British professional football player of Nigerian descent Bukayo Saka is trending.
The Arsenal star has taken to social media to reflect on his performance at the recently concluded 2024 European football championship in Germany.
Bukayo Saka on Euro 2024
Saka played for England three years ago when they lost to Italy in the previous Euro final at Wembley, their home stadium.
Despite leading 1-0 after two minutes thanks to a goal from Luke Shaw, Southgate's Lions gave up a goal in the second half and lost 3-2 on penalties.
Saka was subjected to a lot of criticism for his missed penalty, which followed him throughout the tournament until he scored in the quarterfinal shootout against Switzerland.
After losing the 2024 tournament to Spain once more, Saka has now fought to bring European triumph home for the fans of England this summer.
He took to social media to explain his performances sending a message to the nation.
He said, "It’s hard to put into words how I’m feeling right now.
"But to all the fans, thank you for your incredible support throughout the tournament. You followed us across Germany and showed us love every where we went.
"We really appreciate you. There’s no better feeling than playing for our country at these tournaments and it’s even more special playing with a group like this.
"We all believe we’re on the right track and we’ll get there together. Thank you all again and see you soon."
Saka is now expected to go break as Arsenal gear up for the Premier League with pre-season action.
Background
Against Switzerland in the Euro quarterfinal, Saka tied the score for England with a spectacular drive that curled off the post and into the net from the edge of the penalty area.
With ten minutes remaining, Arsenal's best player scored to tie the score at one, when England were once again at a loss for ideas.
Saka, though, who has been England's most reliable attacker thus far in the competition, came through in a crucial moment.
It sent the game to extra time which led to a penalty win for England and Nigerian football fans took to social media to praise the Arsenal star who associates with his roots.
