Harambee Stars defender Collins Sichenje could be in line for a more prominent role at English Championship club Charlton Athletic following the release of experienced centre-back Conor Coady.

Sichenje and Coady joined the club at the same time, the former linking up with the London-based side on a six-month loan from Wrexham, while he signed a permanent deal from Serbian side Vojvodina in January.

Following the conclusion of the season, Charlton have made a squad update, confirming the players released and those retained with the Kenyan defender among those under contract at the club.

However, they have opted against extending Coady’s stay with the ex-Wolves and Everton defender set to return to Wrexham, where he will now compete with Zak Vyner for a place in the team.

Coady was a mainstay in the Charlton team since his signing, making 12 appearances in the Championship, as he was deployed either as a centre-back or in central midfield.

Given his experience, it was thought that the 33-year-old might see his stay extended but the club seems keen on looking elsewhere.

“The following players will return to their parent clubs following the expiration of their loan deals: Luke Chambers, Harry Clarke, Conor Coady, Jayden Fevrier,” Charlton said via a statement on their website confirming the squad changes.

That potentially opens the door for Sichenje, who is among young defenders at Charlton and whom the team will be relying on next season.

The Kenyan defender played six matches for the club since his arrival, starting four, although injuries hampered him in March as well as the final weeks of the campaign.
